Frayed

Image(s)

Image Description

Strands of an old rope slowly disintegrate under a lakeside dock. Really? No, simply the reflection of a bare tree along a riverbank, taken from a bridge overhead. I’ve enjoyed the creative challenge of making abstract reflection and ripple images in moving water.

I’ve processed this fairly close to what I saw in the viewfinder; any thoughts on a more interpretative or creative approach?

It certainly does look like frayed rope. I like the composition and the color of the reflected tree. My only nit, and a minor one, is the blue looks a tad over-saturated. Apart from that, this is a nice abstract.

Robert,

Kudos for spotting and capturing this. Not sure I recognized rope initially as the trees are pretty clear - but I can certainly see and understand the connection to old strands of rope.

I very much like this as presented. I think the blues offset beautifully with the varying brownish, almost golden colors in the trees. The starker white trunks in the ULC stand out quite beautifully. In fact, I like those so much, the only suggestion I have might be a square crop starting from that ULC. The result is actually removing about 1/3 off the right side of the image. Honestly though, this is very well balanced as framed as presented. I guess the thought of a crop would be more of an alternate view rather than an improvement.

I also like the mix and balance of softness and detail. Beautifully seen!

Oooh, very cool! Those ripples were perfect to give the impression of fraying rope.

It looks like there were shadows across the scene. One school of thought about abstracts is that some should be of more or less even exposure across the frame. If you wanted, you could lessen the shadow effects doing some targeted dodging or maybe a radial gradient (if you use ACR or LR).

As far as more creative interpretations, one could do all sorts of things. How wild do you want to get?

Aren’t reflections fun!?

@Preston_Birdwell and @Lon_Overacker Thanks for the observations and ideas. @Bonnie_Lampley , yes I suppose one could do all sorts of things like your edits. I’ve never really thought of straying too far from what my eye saw, but perhaps I will experiment with that in the future. I do see what you mean about the shadows. Thanks for taking the time to play with the image.

Robert: I love when I can be lazy and just ditto @Lon_Overacker. This is very well seen and composed IMO and rippling reflections are always pleasing. Top notch shot. >=))>

Thank you @Bill_Fach !
