Self Critique
I feel that this image has balance and flow. I like the muted colour palette that gives the feel I was after. I would have preferred the “heart” of the image to be left centred, rather than right centred.
Creative direction
This image is part of a much larger series focussing on a local temperate rainforest. It portrays one aspect of this place that is very special to me. I was hoping to convey a sense of stillness and calm.
Specific Feedback
I would be most interested in feedback on the overall feel of this image and its success, or lack thereof, as a stand alone image from a series. I’d also be interested in feedback on my processing technique and composition.
Technical Details

Andrew, to me this is a fine image. Lots of shapes and lines in it. As for desiring the “heart” of the image to be on the left, you might try (if you haven’t already) flipping the image since this is one of those that there is no special “top” to it. Just see how you like it. It might not after viewing it that way, but worth a try. I too like the mooted colors.
Thanks Shirley. D’oh! Why didn’t I think about flipping it?! I’ve just done that. Not sure whether it works on or not: it’s very different. I’ll save it as a copy, and mull it over. Thanks again.
Andrew: I love little intimate scenes like this and this particular one is excellent. All of the various textures and contours and the subtle color palette are wonderful. Most excellent! >=))>
Thanks Bill, it’s a personal favourite. When I stumbled across it, having wandered about for an hour and a half with my eyes glued to the ground, I had more or less given up on finding anything worth setting my gear up. When I saw this I got ridiculously excited!
Andrew, a really exceptional image. I love the different elements here, the subtle colours, and the orientation.
This flows easily from left to right, and I don’t think flipping it would work as well.
Glad you’re posting again!
A beautiful image, Andrew. I really like the gentle feel of it. Like @Sandy_Richards-Brown I don’t think flipping would work too well as the flow wants to be left to right. I do find myself wishing your “heart” were a little higher in the frame, but I don’t know if you have anything to work with that way. Your framing is excellent-there’s never a really good place to place the edges in an image like this, but I think you found the best available.
