Goat Creek

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was leaving this scene at 2pm on a bright, blue bird day and had some time to wait for the sun to duck behind a tree for enough shadows to shoot a 1sec exposure. I feel that I darkened the upper right corner enough for balance.

Specific Feedback

I would like suggestions on lighting or balance. The crop was tough because there is so much I wanted to keep in the frame but am I being too greedy?

Greg, Welcome to NPN! I’m glad you’re here and I’m looking forward to your imges and participation in critiques.
This is a very nice capture. Your crop works well, imo, and your SS rendered nice milky water. Great detail, and lots of areas of interest to explore.
My only suggestion would be to darken the upper falls just a bit, as it’s pretty bright in comparison to the rest of the image.
Fine work!

Thank you for suggestion. I’m playing around with a small mask on that upper section and I have to agree. It does look better with more consistent light on the water. “lots of areas of interest to explore” is a great compliment!
Cheers!

Welcome to NPN Greg. Nice first post. I love the smooth water and the jagged rocks in this. @Sandy has given some good suggestions on darkening the top of the waterfall, maybe a small reverse vignette (darker center on the waterfall fading out to the outer areas)? I’m looking forward to seeing more of your work, and hearing your thoughts on others’ work. Keep 'em coming.

Welcome to NPN. This is a nice first post. The waterfalls look very natural.

The short answer is yes. As a result the image looks busy. The lighting also adds to the busyness somewhat.

Thanks, I agree the lighting isn’t great and I plan to revisit this scene more often to capture a better shot. I experimented with other focal lengths here that I should take a closer look at in processing.

Cheers

Hi Gregory, This is a lovely waterfall image you have shared with us. I think you have done quite a lot with capturing what you have under such harsh conditions. The top of the falls, which has attracted previous comments, also might be locally corrected in the raw processor using a mask to localize corrections to it’s brightness while still maintaining the texture. I like the crop, it gives the falls room to stretch out and hint at it’s power during run-off. Welcome!

Thank you, Guy. I’m glad to hear positive feedback on the crop. I really like seeing over the falls and wonder what’s going up there! I have done some work on that upper section in Lightroom and it looks much better.
