Green Heron Feeding #2

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

One of over 50 shots taken as this green heron struggled to swallow its catch.

Specific Feedback

The difficulty with this and the others in this series had to do with the background distractions and reflections in the water while trying to bring out the colors and detail in the bird. Suggestions appreciated.

Technical Details

Z8, 400mm, f/10, 1/640, ISO 1100

I would have been very excited to witness this! Great behavioural image.

The busy background does make it hard for the main subject to stand out. My only suggestions would be to mask the bird and fish and lessen the contrast and highlights in tghe background. I would consider another mask and select colour range and reduce the amount of blue, which seems to me, quite saturated. You could play with masks on the bird and fish like adding a touch of contrast or texture and clarity.

Daniel - this is an improvement over yesterday’s image. I’m glad the suggestions helped.
Better saturation and “pop”, although that busy BG will always be there.
I think I like this more unusual pose even better than the first.
With this image, I’d suggest darkening the BG further, and probably additionally burning down the lightest rear reeds. Maybe dampening the refection as well.
Getting better and better!

Thanks more to come.

Thank you Sandy
