Was out and about today looking for birds to photograph. Came home and found this woodpecker in a tree alongside the driveway. I like that I was able to take the shot at eye level.

Pertinent technical details or techniques:
Canon R5; 100-500 at 500 mm; 1/2500 at f7.1; ISO 32,000. I thought Topaz did a pretty good job at noise reduction considering the high ISO.

Nice view of the wood pecker with a nice background.
Image feels too tight in the frame.
ISO 32,000??? Really?

You’re right. I do have a tendency to crop too tightly. Yes, 32,000-heavy overcast, dark day, and I bumped up the speed to stop the head motion.
Hahaha, how ironic, and wonderful, to get this in your driveway! I am learning to not crop too closely as well, but I think it works okay here. This is a beautifully detailed portrait against a lovely soft background. I wouldn’t want any distractions in the background so it may depend on how a slightly wider crop would work. I love the detail in the tree as well. Lots to look at.

Very nice!! I’m not sure what I appreciate more here – the wonderful capture of the bird or the NR capabilities of that sensor and today’s software!
