Harbor Seal

Description

I recently returned from a very wet trip to the Great Bear Rainforest. We got soaked (heck, it’s a rainforest), and my gear suffered tremendously. Eventually, things dried out for a short time, and the cameras and lenses functioned for brief periods, so I was able to document a few scenes.

I love the moodiness of this region, which I think is expressed nicely in this photo. Even without falling rain, there’s still plenty of moisture in the air much of the time during fall. My main wish is that the seal had been in profile (“log sausage”), but with this straight-on look the centered comp made the most sense in order to capture the wider landscape behind.

Max, a really nice image. Gret look from the seal, fine detail, and the misty shore is a perfect BG. There is just enough detail in the mist to create a lot of interest.
Sure sorry you and your gear got drowned, but shots like this hopefully are worth it.

This is really nice Max. I love the misty and moody setting, and the light is great. Good choice on placement of the head-on seal. I really like the reflection and ripples in the water too. So peaceful to view. Sounds like a real mess to go through with all of the rain. Hope you and your equipment dry out eventually.

Hi Max, I love the mystical vibe of the image. I’m a big admirer of atmospheric shots, and this one definitely captures that essence. The composition works beautifully, especially with the pose of the seal.

Great atmosphere, beautifully framed & executed !
It may benefit from some dodging & burning.

I like this image a lot. Subject AND background. If it were mine, I would look at moving the subject to the left some while leaving everything in place. I don’t think it would be hard to pull off. Just a thought.

That’s interesting, Dave. I would move it to the right to counterbalance diagonally against the more interesting texture of the trees in the upper left corner. To me, moving it to the left places all the most best parts of the frame on the left, thus leaving a bunch of textureless water and sky on the right.

So interesting to read all the above comments. Incidentally, I like the photo as is. The central and head-on placement of the seal immediately draws my attention to the sad look that he has on his face, and him sitting alone on that rock looking like that, in the middle of the misty atmosphere accentuates to me the moodiness you talk about in your description I absolutely love the shot!

I love the whole image! The background, and then clearly the seal looking right at you. Perfect. I went to Bella Coola a year and a half ago and we did a boat tour out and about the area. Did see some grizzly’s which was awesome, munching down on salmon. What a beautiful area. You captured this one perfectly.
