Self Critique

I think I managed to get a clear shot of the male, completely out of the water so that the plumage is visible. At the same time, I was able to capture a portion of the rapids to provide a sense of place.

Creative direction

I was shooting for a great look at the beautiful plumage while providing enough background to give a sense of place.

Specific Feedback

The correct exposure with the white rapids and dark duck presented some challenges. I think I did a relatively good job.

Technical Details

In this shot, I was trying to capture a male out of the water sitting relatively still, so I could capture the beautiful markings.

Description

I have been to Yellowstone many times. I have always gone in September to enjoy the colorful foliage and to take in the elk rut. I have always wanted to change it up and go in May. One benefit of going in May are the Harlequin ducts at LeHardy Rapids. Actually, the Harlequin ducks are at the rapids all Spring and Summer. However, the males are only there for a short few weeks in May. I managed to find them and spent quite a bit of time with them. Photographing them is quite a challenge, as they are constantly in motion among the fast moving rapids. It’s difficult to get a clean shot that captures the full body and the beautiful plumage.

Hi Jerry, I like this clear view of the duck along with the environment as you mention. Your patience paid off well. I like the subject placement in the frame as he looks over his domain. Detail in most of the plumage looks good. I think some of the whites could be reduced just a bit but overall the exposure looks good. A fine image.

Excellent detail in the large version, Jerry. The first time I ever saw a Harlequin Duck was at the Le Hardy rapids, so it’s nice to see you included the water action. Now I see them every year along the Oregon coast.

Great photo! I love the colors of the harlequin duck. Beautiful. It does seem like the water especially the upper right is a bit bright. A beautiful image.

Great image of this duck, Jerry. I love the detail in the plumage and the water drops and you have just enough surrounding to convey the habitat nicely. Well done.
