Monarch caterpillar on (what else?) milkweed
Big Island, Hawaii

Specific Feedback

Not everything is sharp here - is that a concern for you?

The important stuff is sharp, Sandy, and the drop off isn’t bad, nor is it producing ugly foreground out of focus effects, so this works nicely for me. The forms of the milkweed flowers make this rather special.

When my wife and I were on Oahu nine years ago we visited Ford Island in Honolulu Harbor and there was a relative of the milkweed in tree form that the monarchs were all over. I didn’t remember it from when I was stationed there in the 70’s, but then almost everything else on the island had changed.

A really striking “Flora-Macro”. I’ve never seen a caterpillar shot with only head and tail before, a great idea. An alternative shot could be to blow up just the larva and its perch, but the composition here is excellent, as are the color contrasts between Stripy and the flowers. It could also be cropped square.

I love this one Sandy. It has a real 3D look that you wouldn’t get if it was 100% in focus all the way through. Cool look at the little peeking caterpillar.

Sandy, this is really nice. I love the face on shot of him. Nice placement on the flower as well as in the frame. The slightly oof areas don’t bother me. Wonderful capture and I can’t think of a thing that would improve it.

Sandy, I raise Monarchs and grow milkweed for them. I know there are many varieties of milkweed but I have not seen this one, then again, I’ve never been to Hawaii either. This is a great shot of the flowers and could stand by them selves. The caterpillar stands out and is a real nice bonus. My eye is drawn to it real quick. I like how just the flower and caterpillar are in focus. I thought maybe you stacked images but I read how you had to take a quick shot. I like the different shades of green in the BG that helps the flower and little critter stand out.
THANKS

Sandy: Good fortune shines on those who are prepared and you took good advantage of this opportunity for sure. The OOF parts are a non-issue for me. This is some really cool milkweed in such good condition. Great find and a terrific capture. >=))>

I like how well the caterpillar blends in until you look carefully. The details of the milkweed are great.

Thanks, everyone, for the comments - and thanks @Shirley_Freeman for the EP ! Glad you’re feeling better!

Sandy I love all the many contrasts of the flowers against the little animal, the low saturation of the first against the high saturation of the second, the low light against the high light, the softness againt the sharpness. In large flowers is always very difficult to have all in perfec fofus and anyway with low saturation an element not in perfect focus doesn’t disturb.
Congratulations for yet another EP.

It’s all been said above - beautiful capture!
