Heron Portrait

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This heron posed for me not too far from my observation point, so I had better luck than usual getting a sharp image than I usually do.

Specific Feedback

(S)He was standing on the ledge of a dock railing that I didn’t like, so I replaced it with something more natural looking. Hope that’s ok in this forum? I’m also wondering about the colors of the bird and the background. Seems like they don’t stand out much. Any suggestions?

Hi Connie
The Blue looks spot on. If you are going to the effort of replacing the background, I would look at opening up the frame to give the Heron more headroom.
Peter

Hmmmm. Hadn’t thought of that Peter. Interesting idea. I shall give it a go…
Oh, and BTW,as clarification, I didn’t replace the background, just the surface the heron was standing on.

pleasing pose, job on the color and detail. Background works. But I agree with others that it Needs is more room specially at the bottom

Hi Connie. The heron looks really good and I like the water drops from it’s fluffing behavior. I would definitely consider giving the bird more room all around. While it’s tempting to fill the frame, when we do so the bird starts feeling like it’s in a cage and in this case you’re perilously close to losing one of the toes of the heron. I’d have to see the dock railing to know if I’d replace it. I almost never do so, but if it were ugly enough I might be tempted. Usually, I’ll just go with what I get and post it in the Everything Else forum where the images taken in an obviously man-made environment get slotted on this site. I don’t have any problem with your background-I like the muted colors since Great-blue Herons are actually pretty much gray.

Thanks Dennis, very helpful. -Connie

I’ve added .5 in. all around, per everyone’s suggestion that the bird needs more space. Do you think it’s enough or should I add more? It already looks better to me, but I wonder if it’s enough? Thanks y’all!

I think the bottom is ok now, though the addition (content aware?) messed it up a bit down there and it could use a bit of cleanup. I’d add another inch or two to the top, I think, but it’s all a matter of taste.

I like this subject, and pose a lot and the adding some meat at the top is a nice look. I would look at adding a touch more to the bottom if it were mine. Well done.

Really excellent detail on the heron with the water drops. I’ll never tire of GBH images… my husband has learned to stop saying “just another GBH” when we find one.
Colors are perfect, and BG fine. Not a great fan of the bottom, but not sure what else you could do, if you want to replace it. Does need more room, at any rate - perhaps more, even, than the re-post
Fine image!

Thank you Sandy. I have lot of images of these birds as well. What is it about them? Connie
