Description
Having “discovered” the delights of a local grassland area, I went back chasing insects. While watching the butterflies hang out in the distance (arrghh), I noticed some movement and an area of discoloration in the goldenrod. A closer look showed this Chinese Praying Mantis. They are quite alert, turning to watch, like this one, as someone approaches closely.
Specific Feedback
I have full body views, but prefer this close up as it shows the face well and the front of the body is decently separated from the surroundings.
Technical Details
R5, 180mm macro, 1/1000 s, f/11, iso 800 tripod.

Mark: These are fearsome critters so he may have been sizing you up for lunch ! I love the colors and the focus on the eyes. Normally an antennae exiting the frame would bug me but this works for me as is. Great find and a superb capture. >=))>
Mark, he is sure staring you down. Checking out that nice camera equipment. Excellent shot. Love the way he turned to look at you and the environment that you captured him in. The in focus flowers in front that he is clutching to and then the oof ones in the BG makes this a nice 3D.
Nice capture of his expression and eyes. Very alien looking. Colors and focus are great. Not sure how you can get this close. Must take great patience.
Great catch of this praying mantis Mark. It looks like it was trying to change its colors a bit to blend in to the environment. Love the 3D look this one.
Mark, great catch of this wonderful and elusive critter. I’ve only seen plain green ones, and have never been fortunate enough to get an image or two.
Excellent colours, detail where it counts, and effective comp.
Very nice!
Hi Mark–Well crafted with that 180mm macro. This subject is perfect for that focal length. Great stare-down and I also like the reticulate wing veins that provide additional interest to the image. Comp is excellent and the image is fine as presented…Jim
I like that the body angles instead of going straight across - it adds a lot of implied energy and action. Not sure I love the cut off antenna going out of frame, but if it’s super long you’d lose the intimate nature of the photo to include it. Fantastic colors and details and I like the amount of hunting ground you included.
