Ice Fractures

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

My brother and I had a tradition for a number of years of hiking up to Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park every Christmas morning (until too many people started doing the same thing). The wind would keep the lake free of snow so I liked to take abstract photos of the ice fractures. The reflections in the upper right are of Hallett Peak, which overlooks the lake . I liked the kind of veiled looked to the fractures, mixed in with the micro bubbles.

Specific Feedback

Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated.

A lovely abstract look to this image, Scott. I do like the look of the fractures and I’ve always liked bubbles in the ice.

I agree with Dennis, Scott. Very nice, and to me, the color palette, the gauzy fractures and the bubbles make this image special. I wondered about the golden reflection. That bit of color is a nice touch.

Thank you for your comment Marylynne, the golden reflection is Hallett Peak that overlooks the lake

Scott, this is a fine ice view, where the touch of reflected color is a great addition. You’ve got a good 3D sense with the ice layers. I would suggest a slight burning-in of the brightest bits in the upper left.

Thank you Mark, I agree and I’ll do that, as soon as I get a chance, I’m in the midst of a cross-country move and don’t have a lot of time right now.

Scott,
wonderful details, colors and composition.
Great abstraction, too.
Regarding potential improvements, I agree with Mark.

Well done, Scott. I like the blues in it as that gives even more feel of cold. Wonderful details. I agree with @Mark_Seaver on the burning/darkening the top left corner.

Exceptional abstract here. Colors, shapes, bubbles, are all excellent compositional elements. I’ve skied across this pond below Hallet peak several times. Colorado and Rocky Mountain national Park are gems. But you’re right about the crowds.

Scott: I have to admit I would not have guessed Hallet Peak in spite of having my own personal stores of Hallet images. I love unique images that can never be duplicated. All of the colors and textures work great. Well seen, composed, captured and presented. >=))>
