This is new ice forming in cracks in old and punky ice on a shallow pond. The sun was setting in the distance, creating the rosy color on the new ice. Minimal editing–a bit of a crop, and some slight color enhancement.

I am new here and a complete amateur. Any suggestions welcome.
This is lovely, Elizabeth. I’m surprised there haven’t been more comments on it, but it is a big day for NFL Football here, and we’re also into holiday party season.
I love the color combination and the free-form shape of that new ice. I’m wondering what your aperture was. The depth of field is a little narrower than I might have wanted. It does bring us into the frame by making the foreground a little out of focus, but we lose that depth of field on the other end a bit too soon for my taste. The critical part (the new ice) is nicely rendered and if were sharper at the “back end,” this would be a real stunner.
Thank you so much, Marylynne. It was shot at f/6.3, and I agree, it would be nice with slightly more depth of field. That’s great and specific feedback, which is why I’m here!
my pleasure, Elizabeth. I’ve been here since it was run by someone else (2010 or 2011 maybe)? I have had no better teacher than this forum.
Increasingly, I shoot in aperture priority mode. I used to go fully manual, and it helped me to learn so many things. But with aperture priority, I have to ask myself the dof question every time. That changes if it’s night sky or wildlife, but it helped me to see the effect, and it encourages me to focus more on composition.
