Frozen Chaos

Image Description

Since Ice abstracts are a specialty (David picked the topic, not me…), I thought I get things started with this look at the ice on my pond from last January. It’s probably no surprise that the wild shapes and colors are what caught my attention. The colors are from leaves and algae on the pond bottom, while the shapes show off the multitude of textures that thin ice can form. If you look close, you can also see the reflections of trees since it was warm enough that there was a thin film of liquid water in places.

I did use a polarizer to adjust the mix of reflection from above and refraction from below.

Very nice! I love the different colors and textures. I did something similar a few years ago. I had colored rocks at the bottom of my pond which created fun colors. Well done!

Mark, this is real eye candy for sure. I think I like it better than the one you posted in Macro this week. I would be thrilled if either one were mine though. So many shapes, colors and texture here.

Love this, Mark. It reminds me of the color palette in Igor’s sea weed image earlier this Fall. It’s a very unique palette, and one that just evokes wet, pond soaked things. That with the crisp angles of ice really make this a joy. I gotta find some ice soon!

Fascinating! Much as I enjoy the larger shapes and colors, it’s the tiny details that really hold my attention. I could explore this for a very long time!

Oh, I love this. Beautiful blotches of variegated colors overlaid with the geometric patterns of the ice. Autumn and winter meet in perfection. Nice tonal range.

What I find particularly intriguing about this image is the liquid water that softens the edges of the ice crystals as well as the rounded shapes as the leaves and algae poke through the surface; an unusual combination.

I think you picked this theme to show off, Mark. This is utterly gorgeous. I love the forms of the ice which looks like it may have had some surface melting to soften the edges a bit. The polarizer was a great choice to let the colors shine.

The lines, textures and the underlying colors in this photo are superb Mark. The reflected soft light gives the surface of the ice a nice sheen. Everything in this image just works so well.

Obviously you are SO BLESSED to have a pond on your property and so nearby! I love this image - abstracts always appeal to me and the colors in this image do no disappoint. Truly great and ready to be hung in an art gallery, but it has to be large!

Mark: How did I miss this ? What Dennis said. I could see a wall full of these and never get tired. So wonderfully unique and utterly unrepeatable. Most excellent. >=))>

Gorgeous, Mark! Well thought out use of the polarizer and the focus stacking. I love the result.
