ICM Cattails

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was an ICM experiment, all the same stand of cattails with different motion/speed. I found this to be really fun and I like the resulting images. The second one is my favorite, it feels very impressionistic.

I’m looking for more nature and artistic shots for my portfolio rather than the usual documentary wildlife shots and ICM will be something I can get into.

Specific Feedback

New to ICM, so anything goes. Is it interesting? Is it art-y?

Technical Details

Similar settings for each:

Fuji X-H2S, f/8, 1/8s, ISO 200, 520mm

I’m no expert on ICM, but my favorite is the first one. I like how the brown contrasts with the green.

The second one I also enjoy. I feel like the colors are well balanced.

On the last one, I don’t love the stones I fill; like they are a bit too defined, but I do enjoy the diagonal lines, so I’m a bit torn on that one.

While it’s probably the least “abstract”, Debbie, the first is my favorite. I just like the feel of it. I could see trimming the right side to just include the last full cattail head. I like the second as well, though the upper part doesn’t do as much for me as the lower 3/4. The double-image effect in the third is interesting, but the cattails themselves feel too defined and vibrant compared with the rocks.

Thank you @Dennis_Plank and @andres1 for the comments - I’ll take these under advisement and work on this technique more.

I’m very late here – been chasing my tail recently – and meant to comment earlier. I absolutely love the first one – I can see what the subject is but it is so nicely abstracted and suggests motion in the wind. I don’t mind the different shape on the right but I think @Dennis_Plank has an idea to consider. I could see removing the 3 or 4 darker heads on the left edge.

The second has a lovely glow but I wish for a little less on top and more at the bottom, which feels too abruptly cut off. The third has an unusual and interesting feel of the reeds rising out of the rocks, but doesn’t hold the charm for me that the other two do.

I applaud your explorations and hope you will continue with them – it is fun and a great thing to do when the light is awful and the subjects are in hiding.

@Diane_Miller Thank you so much for the comments! I will keep going on this.

Debbie, I like your first image the most. I was attracted to the gentle vertical curves of the stems and the blurred colors. I like that I could tell this was a stand of cattails but enjoyed the artistic lines and colors. I agree with previous suggestions for cropping. I am a fan of ICM myself. Always a surprise when you get home. Enjoy.
