Icy Edge

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

One of our sons lives in Scottsdale, AZ and we visited him there for Christmas 2014. We went on from there to Zion, Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon but took this little detour to Horseshoe Bend. I had never been there before and getting up to the edge over an ice encrusted trail was a trick. There are no guard rails at the edge of the canyon so I was literally creeping on elbows and knees to get close. There was ice on the edge so I was not going to stand up. I may have hand held this; I can’t really recall setting up the tripod. Despite the fact that this is my own image it’s my favorite image from this iconic location simply because of the unique conditions. >=))>

Specific Feedback

I was tempted to make the snowflakes go away bit was too lazy to put in the effort. Are they any distraction for you?

Oh wow, Bill, what a shot and quite the story behind it. I don’t blame you for not standing on ice near the edge. The snow on the red rock is really nice. I had this scene on my list when we went to the Arches and several other parks, but the people I was traveling with were getting tired out and this was to be our last park, but I had to cancel it out so never made it there. It was summertime so no ice to have dealt with.
I guess the snowflakes you are talking about are the white specks over the water. I can’t imagine trying to clone out all of them. I would be lazy too. Kudos to you for getting this shot in the cold on icy rocks near the edge! This needs some wall space.

There are so many photos of this iconic spot around, but this one is so unusual it is a pleasure to see it. The spots don’t bother me at all. Well done. I had the same experience as you years ago, crawling on my belly to the edge and it was the most scary shot I’ve ever taken. I promised my wife I wouldn’t kill myself trying to get a photos, so I swore I would never do that again! Since you took this shot they have built a viewing platform which you can see if you google it online.

I agree with what Tony said. I would have thought that I never wanted to see another photo of this place. Yours is beautifully distinct and it’s a pleasure to see.

Bill, it looks very cold! The snow and white sky sure do let the red rocks stand out. I also like the subtle colors in the river.

Bill, this is a very unique image of this iconic spot. Your hard work to get there paid off well. The snow against the red rocks is gorgeous and the bits off snowflakes are a bonus, imo.
Sweet!
