The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Although I’ve seen fresh, blooming Bog Cotton (Eriophorum angustifolium), I’ve never seen the seed pods until I walked out on this frozen bog and found a whole bunch tall enough to stick up above the snow (we have a couple of feet by now). I was so happy that I took a ton of photos and this struck me first to process. Sometimes, spent blooms, seed pods and wilted leaves can be just as lovely as when they are in their primes.

Nope. This isn’t Bog Cotton. Doing some research to see what it actually is.

It’s Iris. Probably Iris Versicolor, aka Blue Flag which is native to Wisconsin and much of North America and Europe.

Specific Feedback

Thoughts on processing and in the field ideas are welcome as I’ll probably go out again on some frozen bog or other. There are plenty and it won’t get warm any time soon.

Technical Details

Handheld

Lr for a tiny crop and some work with wb and calibration to get the colors to be as true as I can make them. Left some of the texture in the snow (it was very sparkly) and did some masking to improve the color separation in the husks. Added some texture, clarity and increased the contrast.

Respect to the “master” of these shots. My recent effort perforce used all the wrong equipment, and I can see how it’s done right here! The 45mm does a fine job of getting all the subject in focus, and you brought out the details so well. You’ll soon have enough of these shots for a whole series which would look good arranged on a big wall.

Very lovely!! The plant is clearly a survivor and the snow is lovely with subtle colors and fine detail! Well seen and presented!

Kris: Another great find, comp and capture. Bear in mind that my personal experience with snow is not quite zero but close enough. That said, this does look just a tiny bit dull and blue on my monitor. A touch of boost on the white slider along with a pinch of warming makes this a touch better for me. Frankly, it doesn’t have much room for improvement but that’s my story. The spent seed pod is a wonderful subject and your rendition of it is marvelous. My overall advice to you would be to brew up a nice steaming cup of hot chocolate and just sit back and admire your work. >=))>

A beautiful image, Kris. The texture and rich colors of the spent seed pod are wonderful and the snow is very well handled.

You get great shots, Kris, of what most people would just pass by. Nicely composed and processed.

Thanks @Mike_Friel, @Diane_Miller , @Bill_Fach, @Dennis_Plank, & @Allen_Brooks - it means a lot in helping me to revive my photography mojo. Finding these little wintering beauties helped, too.

Hm. Looking at other shots, I see this isn’t Bog Cotton at all. I will have to do some research and figure out what it actually is.

And it’s Iris. Hopefully Blue Flag (Iris versicolor) since it’s native and Yellow Flag is not. I feel so silly now thinking this was Bog Cotton. Sheesh.

What @Allen_Brooks said! Most of us probably would have passed this without clicking the shutter. Great find, and great shot!

Thanks @Shirley_Freeman - finder of weird stuff! Another thing to go on my resume.

Oh and the snow was bugging me (@Bill_Fach pointed it out) and so I brightened things a bit. Too much??
