Illusory Size

Image Description

On my 2024 trip to the Oregon Coast and Northern California I indulged myself with a couple days in the Redwoods. On the Avenue of the Giants I pulled off at the first information turnout and I decided to walk back into the trees a little way and came across this little scene, completely unaltered. I thought it was interesting to note the huge big leaf maple leaf laying on the redwood droppings. One would assume that the maple was the big tree while the redwoods would have to be smaller. Au contraire! The maples were little bigger than large bushes while the redwoods were The Redwoods. >=))>

I have other frames with a tighter crop around the maple leaf but thought this proportion gave a better perspective of the overall scene.

I love the frame – the context is very nice. I was hoping to find a redwood cone is the debris for an interesting comparison. For such a huge tree, the cones are the size of a little fingernail. Giant Sequoia cones are a little bigger, rivaling a medium egg.

I’ve often wanted to measure one of those leaves and never done it, but a quick search says they are typically 6-12" across and some can be 24"! They are one of the few trees that give us fall color out here, turning a lovely yellow.

Bill, this is a great, detailed look at the forest floor. The big maple leaf stand out, while the much smaller redwood fronds tell us where you were.
