Into the mist

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Walking in the lower basin of Yellowstone National Park, I came across a spring that captivated me. The bacterial matting and steam rising from the spring created a mystical atmosphere.

I’m looking for an overall review: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Robert, I can see why this scene appealed to you. I like the lines and the way they converge in the upper left. The muted colors work well. The small patch of orange is enhanced by the relative drabness of the other colors. The way the scene disappears in the mist works very well for me. I think the image creates a definite mood.

The foreground seems a little soft. If the details in that area were important that might be a problem but with this shot it doesn’t really bother me.

Crops are always debatable. Since I don’t know where the boundaries of the original image were, I don’t know what you have to work with. If you could restore enough of the left side to avoid bisecting that little patch of what I’m guessing is bacteria, I’d consider doing that. I’d also consider cropping a little off the bottom. These are minor concerns in my view.

All in all I like it.

Hi Don,

Thanks for the great feedback. The original aspect ratio is 4:3, as I use OM Systems OM-1 mkII. What would you think of it as either a 2:3 or, what I liked was a 2:1 crop?

I agree. The foreground is soft, which was not my intention, but maybe bringing out some details and sharpening that area a tad might enhance the photo. As I think about it, I should’ve focused stacked that image.

Cheers,

Bob

Bob, I try to keep most images at 2X3, which is my camera’s aspect ratio and which I also think is attractive. That’s nothing but my taste. This is your image and your taste buds are the only ones that matter.

Robert,

What a wonderful nature abstract. “Into the Mist” certainly works. The thought that came to my mind was “Infinity” - which is the just an added description to fading in to the mist. Very cool.

The jagged lines work beautifully to draw the viewer in to the frame. Next, hitting that litle streak of color (or light?) Hard to tell at this size, but more likely a change in elements and color given this is Yellowstone… But I really like how that little sliver helps anchor the scene. Having the scene fade in to the mist up top is icing on the cake.

My only minor nit would be the softness already mentioned. But I agree with Don too that if the details were important, then it may be an issue. But I think this image is not about fine detail (I guess it could be?), but as presented I think this just works beautifully. I also like the crop as presented.

Beautifully seen and capatured. Really enjoy this one.

Hi Lon,

I appreciate the feedback. I did sharpen up the foreground a tad. The color is bacterial matting, and I thought I should’ve focused stacked this photo for a sharper image.

Have a great week.

Bob
