The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
We have a lot of iris and they’re beginning to bloom. I wanted something painterly and wound up doing a double exposure with one sharp shot and one shot out of focus, both with a large aperture.
Specific Feedback
It’s an odd composition. I thought it worked but I’d be open to contrary opinions.
Technical Details
ISO 400, 100mm, f/3.5, 1/400th. It was a little breezy and I wanted a fast shutter speed.

Don: I love iris and this is a good one. Ours are still several weeks away so thanks for giving me some ideas. Excellent concept for the double exposure and for me the comp does work although initially my first impression was to make the yellow on the left edge go away. It does pull my eye a bit and distracts from the main yellow beard. I do very much like how the stem enters the frame and the detail there. Nicely conceived, captured and presented. >=))>
This composition works very well for my taste, Don. I wish that left petal above the yellow didn’t turn quite so pale, but you can’t control that and I think it might look a bit hokey trying to add blue-though it might work.
Don, the blue colour and shapes attract me, however as an abstract, I wonder if it would be further abstracted if the photo (or a new composition since the Iris are at hand) was cropped to show blue hues and no other colour.
We get scads of irises every year and I’ve photographed them often. I think they’re difficult subjects. I have yet to get an image where there wasn’t something I didn’t like.

That’s a good idea, Rob, although I think it would need to be a different composition.
Dreamy image! Love the idea of going abstract with a close-up of flowers. I think the composition wouldn’t work if everything was sharp, but with the soft processing it really sort of adds to the abstraction by making it a little tough to see exactly what is going on. I like it!
The curves and embraces of the iris petals really send me to some nice place. The soft focus of the sepals on the right seem to give the more abstract petals a foundation. For me, the yellow beard sorta takes over - yellow being hard to ignore - so I thought about covering it up and seeing what happened.
BTW - Be sure to enjoy your February iris, I need to wait 3 more months to see if my iris will be happy this year.
