Last light of the day

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The light was fading pretty fast when I arrived at this waterfall. I really like the moodiness of the scene as the light was fading.

Specific Feedback

I shot this pretty tight on the top to avoid the sky. I was limited where I could stand because the stream was deep. As I stated above, I really was interested in the overall moodiness of the light and how it interacted with the waterfall.

Technical Details

Shot at 35mm, f9, 3.0 sec, ISO 100. Post processed in Adobe LR and PS.

I love this! Gorgeous light and perfect shutter speed! No nits!

I think you’ve nailed the light on the waterfall, helped of course by the flow. The aspect is great too.

Steven, I really like this image. The detail of the foreground transitions well to the movement in the waterfall, then to the color of the background. Really cool.

Hi Steven,
This is flat out gorgeous and dripping with mood! You certainly succeeded with your intention of capturing the mood of this lovely waterfall. You managed to capture the low light in all the right places and it lends an air of mystery to this scene. I also think those amazing looking tree roots only add to that air of mystery. While I quite like this as is I could see a little crop from the right and left sides just to tighten it up some. Just my opinion of course. Very nicely done.

Such a beautiful scene you’ve rendered here. The slow shutter speed for the water is just gorgeous!

Beautiful image! Plenty mood in this one, and great depth. Excellent choice to keep the sky out of the frame, not too tight on the top. And I can almost touch the nightfall.
In general, I prefer a shorter shutter speed on moving water, to keep more of the dynamics in the water. But in this case, the result is a very peaceful scene and it is just right to me.

I’d agree with everyone here and add that I really like the green color in the water reflecting the trees and transitioning to white as, I guess, it is picking up the sky.

Very nice! I especially love that light in the top center – over the river. Nice work and no nits from me either.

This is a lovely image as presented and I agree with the previous posters sentiments. The mood is great. If, however, you wanted to consider an alternative edit I would suggest the following. The main interest for me is the middle of the frame slightly left of centre. I would brighten the highlights slightly to make it a clear focal point. The lighter area of the trees where there are only grey branches I would lighten plus add a glow. Anyway, give it a try and see what you think. As everyone else has made mention it is a great image as is.

This is some of the nicest light I’ve seen in a creek/waterfall image in a long time. Very well captured. I go back and forth on the foreground roots/rocks. I like them, but I’m not certain there’s enough interest there to hold my attention. Then again, that’s likely not their purpose. I do like that they’re dark but still have some nice highlights. Overall, this is a gorgeous image.
