Last of the Rainbows

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Sharing the last of the rainbow images from that glorious day on the Monterey Penninsula in early February. Nothing special here other than not including any land/sea features. But a rainbow is a rainbow and needs to explanation or reference, right?

Full disclosure. There were 4 or 5 gulls soaring around, but they were so small they looked more like sensor dust than anything, so I cloned them out

Specific Feedback

Nothing too original or creative here. So I’m mostly looking for feedback on processing. The stormy sky below the rainbow is originally more blue. I tried to tame that, but keep things on the cool side.

Any and all feedback, comments and suggestions welcome.

Wonderful colors, and I love the composition with just the rainbow and clouds. I think any ground would be distracting.

Lon, it works as presented and wonderful array of colors in the bow and excellent stormy sky too. I know you don’t have NIK, but I thought maybe it could use more structure in the clouds for a tighter or crisper look. Just a thought and not a nit.

Such a simple but effective image, Lon. I love how the rainbow more or less separates the darker clouds at bottom from the lighter clouds at top. I bet this would be lovely printed on aluminum. Probably be super luminous.

What he said. No nits; I can’t even find some dust bunnies to complain about.

Hi Lon,
I think this works beautifully as presented with no land mass. I am loving the drama and textures in the clouds as well as that gorgeous colorful rainbow. IMO the processing looks great. No suggestions from me. I have enjoyed your rainbow series from that special day.

Lon, this sky only rainbow looks great and I’m enjoying the lack of ground. The bow shows all off the colors and has good luminosity in the right 2/3rd (where the most rain is falling and the sun is the brightest). I do think I’m seeing some hints of magenta in the sky along the top.

Thank you @Diane_Miller , @Paul_Breitkreuz , @Bret_Edge , @John_Williams, @Ed_Lowe and @Mark_Seaver for taking the time to leave a comment and make some suggestions.

Hi Paul, yes, you’re right. no more NIK. But your suggestion made me think of another way to add more “structure”, and that was the use of TK’s original “Lights Triple Play”. That worked pretty well when I re-worked, but I’m not sure enough difference to make worth reposting. An excellent observation for sure.

Good catch Mark. In fact, I see multiple color hints which tells me, if anything, perhaps one of the adjustments, probably in ACR, was taken too far. Not quite sure. I think perhaps if I masked in a b&w layer at some low-mid opacity, that could neutralize any colors in the clouds.

Thanks again for taking the time.

Lon, you’re correct. I think TK had a cloud structure tool in his kit, but I never figured that one out. Still use most all his other items to this day off and on. Tony was really helpful back in the day… :+1:

I think this looks great - both in terms of composition and with processing. I love the idea of having only a part of the sky (without any land) in a photograph. It’s something different and makes it stand out from the crowd.
