Description
this is taken in the suburbs of San Diego several years ago. There must’ve been several hundred of these Lawrence,s goldfinches in this guy’s backyard. I can’t remember his name but he was long time NPN photographer.

Technical Details
I just can’t find the data. It was taken with a Sony A1 and for 400 mm telephoto. Processing done in light room, and DxO photo lab

HI David. Probably Charlie van Tassel’s yard at a wild guess, though I never went on that trip. Nice detail. Do you remember if there was something across the cheek in the raw file? The feather texture in that area has a repeating pattern that looks like cloning before we had the fancy tools available.
David,
I don’t pop in here very often, but wanted to say it’s great to see you posting.
Great capture of the finch. It sure looks to me like this guy has a bit of that lichen/moss? in his beak? Was he feeding on that?
Just a personal choice, but the bird and the branch seem a little bit on the hot side; certainly not over exposed, so really a matter of preference.
I didn’t really notice until reading Dennis’ comment, but there is some odd pattern off the head a little bit. Otherwise, love the color on the breast and the great details.
Hi Allen
I like the framing and eye contact, but there is something our camera nin’t like just under the eye on of the Goldfinch?
Peter
hi guys
I see the unusual pattern and out of nowhere came from. Certainly isn’t in the image I posted. But it does look like something I posted elsewhere. I have no idea and I will find the original and try to repost it but it’s on my other computer so it will have to wait a bit.
here is a repost

Glad you found the good copy, David. This looks great.
Works for me, David. Excellent detail, a complementary background, and the perch with the lichen fits in well with the bird’s colors.
