The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
This is from almost a month ago – I’ve had fewer than usual visitors to the feeders this spring. I only saw a few Goldfinches for a couple of weeks and since then I’ve only seen two. Fresh nyger seed didn’t make any difference.
Specific Feedback
All comments welcome!
Technical Details
Not much done – some shadow-highlight moves and a slight crop.

Thanks, @Gill_Vanderlip! I do refer to the lens as my 1000mm macro! And I have used it for small flowers, but I prefer the 100mm macro when I can get close. The birds are about 15 ft away on perches near the feeders and I’m hiding in a blind or sometimes just sitting in the open but very still. I don’t think they would let me get close enough to use a macro, but if they would – you bet I would! With focus stacking! The fast shutter is mostly to try to stop their almost constant motion. And I rely on short bursts (at 20 fps) to increase the odds.
Wow. My nature photography is really limited. You have that down to a science. Lots of good nature Photographers on the NPN. Thanks for the info. Always learning and admiring. You really do great work and you know what you are doing. Peace to you and your Family.
Another nice one! Yellows are perfect and feather detail on the head is excellent. THE BG color goes well with the subject. The lichens are a nice added feature and are a welcome piece of the comp. Well done!..Jim
Beautiful job on the Goldfinch, Diane, and an interesting perch with a sweet background.
Re Goldfinch feeders: We’ve about given upon Nyger thistle since the pandemic. We haven’t tried any this year, but my theory is that it sat on ships during the pandemic when we couldn’t get it and went bad. However it still ended up getting sold. The birds through at least last year have just ignored it. You could try sunflower chips, though they get messy if it rains.
Hi Diane, nice engaging pose with a great look at the eye/head. Critical sharpness where it needs to be. Lovely background and pleasing perch. A fine image of a real cutie.
Thanks, @Allen_Brooks, @glennie, @Jim_Zablotny, @Dennis_Plank and @Allen_Sparks! Dennis, I’ll try sunflower chips – thanks! I hadn’t thought about them. I always have black sunflower seeds out but I think they’re a mite too big for these little dudes. (And rain is pretty predictable here – the next one will be in November.)
