Description
Mellon Udrigle, Wester Ross, Scotland
I was pretty convinced the scene that confronted us at Mellon Udrigle could not possibly be surpassed by what we had witnessed earlier, but arguably I was wrong. The sky filled with lenticular clouds ripped off the Fannichs in the gale force winds that swept offshore from the nearby mountains. The clouds became fringed by rings of reflected amber and orange from the rising sun above blown spray and mountainous turquoise waves. I have several similar, all taken shortly after sunrise. It was an epic morning and I confess I found it almost impossible not to press the shutter release. This was one of my favourites.

I can see why you would be held spellbound by this scene, Ian. What a glorious image. The light is spectacular, the colors are nicely soft and pastel-like. And the slow shutter speed enhanced the wave movement perfectly. A perfect candidate for a large print, sir.
Luck favors the prepared, someone once said, and this is the perfect example of that. What a glorious scene, Ian! Your timing was perfect. If I had one small nit, my eye goes to that bright area just above the prominent cloud on the left. This is a fine photograph that deserves to be seen large. One of the things here that I love is breaking wave. It is just sweet!

Your timing for this photo was perfect. Overall its perfect as well. The glow in the sky and its reflection in the water on the bottom right just take this to a whole other level of enjoyment. The soft pastel colors work so well to tame the harsh and probably very cold wind buffeting the water. The photo welcomes the viewer in and wraps them with a big warm hug.

Oh my word, those colors - both in the sky and the water! The only think I might suggest is to darken that lightest patch towards the upper left, if you’re inclined.
Hi Ian,
Beautiful subtle colours, and I like how you timed shooting the position of the main L/H wave so as not to obscure the distant R/H wave ripping down the long rocky outcrop at Mellon.
It was an awe inspiring scene which confronted the two of us that morning, and you should be congratulated on whittling down your selection to a final choice… as I still have of a ‘top 16(!)’ which I’ve now decided to leave and come back to in a few weeks.
Lastly, I concur with the the comment below made by Bonnie…which could be achieved in few seconds with a simple fine slither of a crop off the top of the frame.
