Light in the Darkness

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I have several Cala Lilies growing in my yard and wanted to do something a bit different. This is a composite of 2 photos, one for the flower and the other for the reflection. I used a black cloth and black plate of water for the refection. The reflection seems a little off to me, though I believe that’s mostly due to the water being only a few inches from the bloom. I plan to try more separation and suspend the bloom rather than laying it flat.

Specific Feedback

All comments and suggestions welcome. Does the reflection look odd to you?

Very cool, Steve. I suspect it’s an optical illusion to to relative brightness, but the real bloom looks larger than the reflection and the width is affected by the viewing angles of the two. You might want to play with the luminosity of the reflection to try achieving a better visual balance regardless of what reality gave you. This looks like a fun exercise.

A cool idea for a lovely flower! (I’m definitely a sucker for Callas.) I think here there is a bit of a disconnect between the flower and its reflection, though. I would find it more pleasing if the top bloom’s stem went up instead of down – more like an actual reflection. The size difference doesn’t bother me but it might if the reflection was more realistic.

You can get good reflections with a sheet of black plexi, but dust and scratches will be an issue. Your idea here seems to work very well, though.

Looking forward to the development of this idea!

Hi Steve…it’s been awhile, good to see your still hanging around. I really like your photo it’s very creative and well executed. I do think the reflection looks a bit odd but it would be a tall order to pull off total realism with the technique you used. I wouldn’t know how to do it but I think you’ve made a very nice image here.

Thank you @Dennis_Plank, @Diane_Miller and @Bruce_King for your comments. I also saw the direction of the stem as an issue between the bloom and it’s reflection, which is part of why I thought it was off. I’m looking forward to the next attempt with more separation and having the bloom suspended. As well as other perspectives.

Creative and soothing even if it is still a work in progress. I like the warm tonalities throughout. It is a little bit of a mind bender, but pleasing and quite lovely in the dark and light contrasts with the sharp and defined curves. Keep working it.

Steve: Ditto what @Kris_Smith said. I like the concept and the overall execution. A reflection should be a bit darker than the original but I do think you could bring it up just a touch. :+1: :+1:>=))>

@Kris_Smith and @Bill_Fach , thanks for the comments! I hope to make another attempt tomorrow.
