Lighthouse of Humanity (+rework)

Cropped and extended on the left side

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I came across this mountain top during a hike. The stone tower is called “Lighthouse of Humanity”. The scene itself is not particularly intriguing but the mist in the air below made the distant background almost look like black and white. So, I could not resist to take the shot and I´m happy that the picture turned out the same it looked when I was there.

Specific Feedback

What do you think? Could I have done something different? I´m not happy with the tree on the left side but cropping it out is putting the lighthouse too close to the side. I like my pictures a bit on the dark side, is it too much?

Technical Details

ISO200, f6.3, 28mm, 1/80s

I agree with you about the tree. Maybe even add a little canvas to move it further from the edge. I like a lot of dark in my images also, so no problem there. I would probably crop out some of the featureless sky and crop a little from the right. I feel also the vignette in the sky is too strong and gray looking. The crop would take a lot of that out.

Thank you, Michael!
Yes, the crop is definately better

I was just about to type exactly what Michael said about the crop, I definitely like it cropped. The darkness looks good to my eye, I think my only nit is the image seems a little weighted too much too the left, but given the elements in the image I’m not sure that was in your control. What is that attached to the tower? I also like how you handled the tonal range in the image . It is intriguing how the background seems to fade into black and white as you move up through the landscape to the sky.

Thank you, Scott!
It is a small plate to honor and remeber the artist who created the tower. A different angle was not really possible as there was not much space to stand and wanted the tower in the picture and I only had a 28mm lens.

It does look black and white in the distance, interesting effect. I like the rework better, but might take out that little bit of leaves in the bottom right corner. I too prefer less vignette.

Thank you, John!
