Lilac-Breasted Roller

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

South Africa
The rollers are very common, and I asked Jim to stop almost every time we found one.
They mate for life, and , to feed, they swoop down from an elevated perch next to their prey (often beetles) and eat it on the ground or return to a perch where they batter it before swallowing it whole.
This was one of my first images using the Bird-eye tracking on my new (then) A1 and
I was just stunned.

This is a mighty fine capture of a tricky image to nail. You got it. And, what a cool looking bird it is. I’d say, mission accomplished!

Gorgeous shot, Sandy. These head on ones are really hard on the tracking algorithms and this one worked perfectly. I suspect the shading is correct, but you might look at bringing up the eyes and cheeks just a bit to make the face stand out slightly more.

Excellent, with a perfect BG! Aren’t these new toys so cool?!!

Hi Sandy, splendid catch with a wonderful head on view. Dynamic wing position and sharpness is great. Very impressive.

@Diane_Miller
Yes! But it still takes the correct settings, and competant panning ability from the person BEHIND the camera,
especially with close subjects. :slight_smile:
