Lilies and Buds 2

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I cruise around our garden most mornings to see what’s blooming. Our day lilies are going strong and I liked how this one interacted with the redbud leaves. >=))>

Specific Feedback

I do my first round of images with my phone and then if I have time I grab the real camera. I’m posting this from my phone to see how the quality stacks up.

Beautiful job on the lily and I like the depth of field, Bill. With both the red redbud leaf and the lily aiming for the right side of the frame, it feels a little right heavy to me.

Lovely juxtaposition of the bloom, leaves and buds. You got a very pleasing shallow DOF here for an iPhone – did you achieve that in processing? (I’m way behind in any sort of in-camera processing.)

I wouldn’t have thought it was an iPhone shot – I don’t see evidence of it. I think this could work with a slightly lower exposure – that would bring up a little more detail in the leaves and petals.

Diane: One of the shooting modes in the Pro Max versions is Portrait. It limits how close you can get to the subject but after capture you can further modify the DOF. I have no idea how that works. The original capture is at a nominal f4.5 but you can adjust it all the way down to f1.4. My phone is a 13 so I don’t know exactly what more current versions can do but it is a cool feature. >=))>

Truly bizarre!! We upgraded a few months ago as Ted’s was getting dementia (he rides it hard and puts it away wet) and I have hardly looked at the camera settings but now I see some stuff I hadn’t been aware of — will have a look! I need to play with it more. Thanks!

Bill, very cool image of a day lily. I never get shots I’m happy with from our lilies.

I like the look and the vignette. Well done.
