Low tide concealment

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This photo was taken in the shallows of Golden Bay that has a huge population of starfish, most of which are either exposed or just underwater at low tide when local birds feast on them. It is always interesting to look at the various means of camouflage employed by the starfish to avoid being the next meal, and this image shows a particularly effective concealment.

Specific Feedback

All comments are welcome. Does the image pique your curiosity, as as the scene did for me when I stumbled across it while wading through the shallow water.

Lovely image even without the nature story! The shapes and tonalities are loaded with visual interest. I never would have known what I was looking at.

Phil,

So you’re saying there’s a starfish in the frame somewhere? For the life of me, I can’t see it. I can only guess part of it is around the sharper and darker "hole below and right of center?

To be sure, you have a terrific and natural abstract and a great nature story. The highlighted ridges of sand (or water) are wonderful creating great patterns and contrasts.

Even a bit mesmerizing. Very cool

I like this a lot, Phil. The more I look at it, the more I enjoy it. I took a few days to pop in and see if anything changed for me each time a visited the image.

What I love most is the way the light glances at a different angle from the wave action’s sculpting of the sand. As for the starfish, kudos to it. I think I see its texture, but barely its shape. Well done!

Thankyou @Diane_Miller, @Lon_Overacker, and @Marylynne_Diggs for your kind comments. Yes, Lon described the position of the starfish correctly, based on the somewhat different texture than the sand around it. The original raw shows it clearly.
