Lower Falls w Rainbow #1

Lower Falls w Rainbow #2

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I managed to catch a strong rainbow in the mist from Lower Falls, YNP, last week. Over a period of about 20 minutes I watched the rainbow move from left to right across the falling water. Here are two views of the full falls.

Specific Feedback

I’m curious as two which one folks prefer and especially why. I did not use a slow shutter to smooth the water because for me the detailed curtains of water show the power best.

Technical Details

R5, 100-500, @ 128 #1 and @ 135 #2, 1/800 s, f/14, iso 800, tripod and polarizer.

Mark: Beautiful frames and knowing the orientation of these falls and how the light enters the canyon at this time of year I suspect you were up fairly early. Another fascinating feature for me is the illusion that #2 is taller even though the aspect ratio of both is exactly the same. Perhaps it’s because the rainbow is longer. Also the slightly different POV that shows a bit more of the slope in the LRC may contribute. I like the amount of that slope in #1 better than in #2 but I like the rainbow more in #2. I’ll just have one of each please. >=))>

Tough call on this one, Mark but after popping back and forth between the two for a minute or two I decided I like the second version better because the rock wall on the right side of the waterfall better balances with the rock wall on the left side. In the first one it feels chopped off. I also like seeing more of the forest in the lrc in the second image and lastly, it appears that the rainbow is longer in the second version even if it’s not. Really good takes on both of them but definitely number 2 for me.

Hi Mark,

Just stopping in to appreciate this. Like Bill, I’m torn. I like both. I think I like the second image best. It’s the fact that the rainbow feels less interrupted (even though it is shorter on the uphill side). I think for me, it allows the water and rainbow to flow the same direction–and the direction of the slope in the foreground.

Nice work.

ML

Mark,

Awesome! A tough call however between the two as folks have already pointed out. Like Bill, I’ll take two, thank you!

Initially, I like the second simply because of the better presence of the rainbow. But the first one offers a little hint of the rainbox to the right and also the first really shows the powerful nature of these dramatic falls where the rainbow is a wonderful accent. The second is more about the rainbow and the power of the falls is not as strong.

Heck, you can’t go wrong with either! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Mark,
First off, I do not think you can go wrong with either version of this impressive waterfall. Both images show the raw power of Yellowstone Falls perfectly and after toggling back and forth several times I am leaning toward version #2. I like the balance in that one a bit more with the right and left rock walls; plus the rainbow is a little larger and shares equal billing with that impressive water flow. Beautifully done!

I agree that either version works well, but also lean to number two for the reasons others have stated.
