Lower Lewis River Falls w/ Re-post

Original Post:

My 2nd photo from the very wet fall photo trip last October with @John_Williams. This was the last stop of the 4 day trip. Lower Lewis River Falls is a frequently photographed spot, but it was my first time there. There was a bit of fog and mist around and behind the falls.

Technical Details

Is this a composite: No

I cloned out a few distractions on the left and a bright red ribbon in the bush at the bottom right corner. I also softened the reflections on the water below the falls.

Well this is pretty cool - the mist really helps to keep things simple despite the rather large view. The big trees in the falls themselves are really something. They add some scale that could be deceptive, but looks impressive. Processing and white balance look pretty good, although you could slice off a little on the left to eliminate that trunk, or you could try cloning it out. I find my attention going to it more than you probably want. If it were mind I’d try softening the foliage a little. Grand view well shot!

I really like this, Steve. I’m not really crazy about waterfall images. But I think that the fallen trees on the right really give this some character and tell a story. I also like the ss you used. It gives the water a soft, dreamy look, which kind of is contrast to what it’s been able to do to those trees!

@Kris_Smith and @Vanessa_Hill, thank you for your comments! Kris, I cropped out the tree trunk on the left and reduced the saturation and luminance of orange and yellows to soften the fall colors. I also decided to crop out the partial diagonal log on the right. Thanks for your suggestions.

The repost looks good. I hadn’t noticed the log on the far right, but not it’s gone I think it helps emphasize the composition. Same with the one on the far left. The softer colors seem more harmonious as well. Excellent!

Beautiful fall scene. I prefer the original, but I would desaturate the orange leaves on the left edge. I find the leaning trees on each side balance each other well in the comp. Looking good.

Thanks @Harley_Goldman! I appreciate the comments. I agree about desaturating the orange leaves on the left edge.

The repost works quite well, Steve. I like the soft look, the fog/mist, and the choice of shutter speed makes the water perfect. Really nice shot.

Really nice mood here Steve. The processing looks great and I like your chosen SS and what’s not to like with that wonderful fog above the falls. I also like that you cropped away that log along the right edge in the repost. Did you happen to try and clone away the orange leaves along the left edge? I ask because I actually like seeing all of the yellow tree in the original rather than crop[ping some of it off to get rid of the orange leaves. Beautiful image.

Thanks David! I appreciate the nice comments!

Thanks Ed! I cropped back to the original left side and cloned out the orange leaves. I also added back a little of the red and orange saturation and luminance, though not quite as much as the original post.

Thanks again!

Repost #2 nails it perfectly for me Steve!

Love this one Steve! I’m still jealous of the foggy background you caught. (Maybe this was when I was dealing with swimming camera issues??) My images have much less fog in the background. I also think it was a good idea to capture the whole falls, despite those trees. It really gives a sense of scale. The repost is perfection.

Thanks @John_Williams! Yes this was taken while you and your new camera were swimming in the river. I have several shots from another angle or focusing on small portions of the falls but this was my favorite. Glad I got it before we had to rush out of there to find a box of rice!
