Description

Tiger Beetles are the world’s fastest-running insects, at up to 5.5 mph. Yesterday I found this Japanese Tiger Beetle on a sandy path in the hot sun. It pounced and locked on to a young grasshopper with those monster mandibles. It proceeded to suck all the goodness out of its prey in about 4 minutes. As with many creatures, I find that tiger beetles vary greatly in their approachability. This one let me come very close once it was used to my presence. And as they have a clearly delineated stretch of path to patrol, I can find it on another day in the same place.

Specific Feedback

I wanted to emphasize the head area and also to be sure of a blurred background. Are you happy with the amount in focus here?

What an incredible critter! Just stunning colours and - that JAW!
Detail looks fine from here.
A small nit only - that blip above it’s shoulders is a leg, I guess, but it might be removed.
A little more room at the top would be good as well.
Always the artist’s choice!
Just exceptional..

What Can I say. One great Image… Im blown away with how you shot it. 1000 shutter. ISO 1000 … You really capture this Beetle with an amazing sharpness and great color. Really amazing Image and technigue to capture it.

Super great shot, Mike. The details and color are really nice. I could see some more room about his head, but not a major deal.

Very cool beetle, Mike. The colors are amazing and it’s interesting how they contrast with that plain steel gray eye. I do think you have him caged in the frame rather tightly.

@Sandy_Richards-Brown @Gill_Vanderlip @Shirley_Freeman @Dennis_Plank - OK, I’ve given him more munch-room at the top.

Mike: A fearsome critter indeed with spectacular color and detail. I like the room you have on top. It’s a small nit but I agree with @Sandy_Richards-Brown regarding that OOF leg part extending above his back. Make that go away and frame it for your door at Halloween. I guarantee there will be few kids approaching your door. Of course they may not do that in Korea so perhaps save it for unpleasant/unwanted solicitors.>=))>

Great idea about the trick-and-treaters, as it’s catching (on) in Korea too. Unfortunately, the solicitors tend to slither in via the internet! @Bill_Fach @Sandy_Richards-Brown : amputation effected.

Excellent image Mike. I love the colors and the pose and the details are incredible.

An attention grabber for sure, Mike. Great colors and detail. Rather alien looking.
