Marshmallow Sea

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

On our hike off Mt. Hood a few weeks back, we passed by a bog area that had some fun textures in the snow.

Specific Feedback

This is a bit of a “for the fun of it” image. I’m not sure about that more vertical line in the lower half to the right. Does that put too much of a damper on the image?

I’ve removed dark flecks of plant material that I felt detracted. I’ll post the sidecar jpg below so you can see what I cropped from and what specks I removed.

Here’s the sidecar jpg. I increased the white point luminosity for better viewing as the original was underexposed.

The title says it all! I love it as is!

John, a really well crafted image from the original take here. The vertical on the right is no issue IMO. As you stated; “for the fun of it” image…I’ll just say; " it works for me"… :+1:

Lovely abstract! The vertical doesn’t bother me either. My eye does immediately go there and then it rises to the upper left along that line and then it swirls back in from left to right as when reading a book.

If it bothers you, you could raise that shadow along the vertical line to make it less prominent. It is the darkest part of the image.

Really love the feeling of this regardless of that element.

Hi John,
Even though you mentioned this is a “for the fun of it image” this turned out beautifully. I have always wanted to capture an image like this, but it has always eluded me for one reason or another. There is something about a fresh coating of snow that seems to cleanse the soul and make some of the disturbing things going on in the world disappear for a little while. That vertical line you mentioned does not bother me one iota. In fact I think it helps direct the eye to the other lines of the mounds and take the viewer around the scene. Great job on the whites BTW.

Well I’m having lots of fun looking at this image, John. You have fantastic light and shadows creating incredible depth. I just love the look of newly fallen snow and how fluffy and perfect it all looks.
The clump along the right side of the image does not detract at all. I actually like it. I t feels like a wrong way driver on a one way road creating tension in a good way. I also like the slight pano composition you chose on this. It works well. The more I view this the more I like it. Well done!

I love snow abstracts. This looks like meringue. I could fall into its softness. Beautifully executed.

I actually like the sidecar jpg because it doesn’t try to be artsy. But that’s just me.

Nice work, John. Great eye to isolate this scene amongst all the mounds. I always see human forms in images like this and this is no exception. And no, the vertical area doesn’t bother me. I think it adds to the image. There’s a boggy area at Blackwater Falls in WV that @Ed_Lowe and I like to visit that has mounds like this that would probably look similar, but for some reason, we’ve never tried them in the snow.

John, having had snow on the ground for a week, I’ve been looking at trying something like this. However, it needed to be done early to avoid all of the “dark specs” that the forest adds over time. I like the ridge on the right, it balances nicely with the two ridges coming in from the left. Definitely fun.
