Description
I sheltered behind a rockwall as the wind blew fiercely down this little coastal creek. These birds are accustomed to our friends who own the property but sitting behind the wall was a good place to watch without disturbing the birds.
Three hatched quite quickly at the same time, but one egg remained. One parent would not leave the nest. (Which is not more than a scratch mark in the sand.) The three hatchlings took it upon themselves to explore. The wind was so strong it blew them down the beach and into the water. Needless to say, human intervention prevailed. The fourth did eventually hatch.
These birds have “spurs” on their carpal joints which they use to swoop and scare off predators…and unsuspecting people.
