Migration Fallout (Juvenile Male Baltimore Oriole)

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The other day, the weather changed dramatically with north winds and rain knocking migrants out of the sky. Eastern kingbirds, Baltimore and orchard orioles, and white crowned sparrows were perched everywhere in our yard. 4 Baltimore orioles and a first year orchard oriole were clustered around the feeders waiting to tank up on carbs. This year old male Baltimore oriole was looking down at the vat of grape jelly and halves of oranges when I took its photo. Not as vibrant as an adult male Baltimore oriole, but very worthy as a photo subject.

Specific Feedback

This is a tighter crop than the adult male oriole that I posted previously. How do you like this crop? I might need to take some off the bottom based on reviewers’ suggestions.

This looks great and the crop works for me as he is looking down. Gorgeous detail, colors, pose, perch and BG!

I’m seeing more first and second year individuals than before, both Hooded and Bullocks. Maybe more are surviving migration and winter vacation this year? Or else I’m paying more attention…

Hi Jim, nice catch! I agree with Diane that the room provided on the bottom works since the bird is looking that way. A pleasing image. Nice details, head turn and background. Well done.

Hi Jim
I wouldn’t change the framing. The branch brings my eye to the Oriole’s eye. Everything looks good.

Jim:

Outstanding composition with superb detail and color. It’s exceedingly sharp, but not over sharp. I don’t quite sense. The crunchiness from over sharpened image. the pose is superb.
Depth of fields is perfect. A very nice job.

Very nice, Jim. I do like the mottled coloration of the hood in the first year bird. The image quality and composition are excellent.
