Description

The barred owls at the local state park continue to hunt for crayfish in a small wetlands area. The wetlands are covered in duckweed. The owls seem to feel for crayfish with their feet and then grab with their beaks.

Specific Feedback

Any.
With all the green foliage and duckweed, the birds tend to have a green cast in the raw files. I have tried to lessen this while still keeping a realistic look.

Technical Details

Canon R7, 200-800mm, monopod which has helped greatly in getting sharp shots in the low light.
ISO 4000 or 6400, other settings vary

Processed in DXO PureRaw 4 and Photoshop.

A wonderful set of photos To get them in the day with decent light I would have loved to be there

Great series, Allen. I hope you can get one making a catch. Now I understand why that one you posted looked rather greenish. Aside from the environment,it’s been down there in the duckweed.

Pretty nice series! On my monitor, the green cast is handled very well. They are such fun owls and I like the pose in image barredowl14…Jim

Oh my! This is quite the series Allen! Fishing owls is something quite new to me and I think it’s extraordinary.

You’ve captured the behaviour so well and all the images are spot on. Good job on the processing. I wouldn’t be surprised if the green cast you mention is actually duckweed stain.

Allen,

Outstanding series! I can just imagine the fun and just experience getting to observe these owls.

Although I can say I don’t have much experience, or knowledge of the behaviours of these owls, but I find it pretty unique to capture them with their feet in the water (feeling around for the crayfish as you noted.) Very cool.

Technically masterful; great colors, detail, et. all. Beautiful work.

Fantastic series!! All said above – no nits at all!!

Hi Allen
Great serices of Barred Owls and much better color balance.
