I like the composition and the bee is quite sharp. I like that some of the flowers have bloomed and some have not. For my taste, I think I’d prefer more color, but would have to see the original to see if this works for me. I need to take your advice and try different elements of photography.

Hmm, I can see why you desaturated the color, Gill. Overall, I do prefer more color; maybe a compromise, keeping the full color of the bee and some desaturation on the rest.

I understand that. Not sure which way to go. The bee is main part of this image as I learn more about this style of photography. To much color took away from him. I’m pretty much a B&W photographer so try that happy middle ground. I’ll revisit and see what I come up with. Thanks for showing interest !!!

Gil, I love these images! While I’m a colour junkie (as Bill would say), about halfway between these 2 would work for ME - not fully coloured, but not quite so dull as the first.
What matters though, is YOU vision and preference!

Thanks. I’m torn on this image actually. Glad I posted it. Get some feedback.Maybe crop it differently. I’ll look at it some and see my next move.
Thanks again.

I cropped it some. But it is starting lose some quality… Im learning more about. At Basic size it does well. Blow it up and it tears down. But I think for my book a 4x6 image would work good enough… Just not sure yet.

Gill: I like the desaturated idea and think for this subject and these flowers (milkweed) it does indeed bring more emphasis on the bee. Well conceived and executed. >=))>

Thanks. I added slight color and cropped version and it works well. But in all honesty. I have a ways to go to get to your level. And Shirley Freeman. But this style is new to me and I’m having fun !!

With insects, they are most active on bright, sunny days with very warm temperatures. Bumblebees have fuzzy bodies which provides them with a lot of insulation. So this means that they are active at or before sunrise even on cool mornings. That means shooting with softer lighting will give you more pleasing compositions with less contrasty shadows. The cropped version is very nice. Some of the highlights are very bright so you can tone down the highlights using the Camera Raw Filter in Photoshop. That may recover some of the details in the highlights on the bees’s thorax. Great start and keep shooting!..Jim

Thanks so much. I’ve been shooting BUGS the few weeks. A real challenge. Just as I walk around and see what’s going on. I’m doing a series for my book.
I’ll keep shooting through the summer and see what I get accomplished.
Thanks for the information.

Gill, shooting bees and bugs can be fun. I hope you are enjoying. I am wondering on this shot if B&W would be a good choice, since the colors are not quite (at least on my screen) looking quite right. I know you are a huge fan of B&W. Just a thought. Looking forward to more of your shots of bugs and bees.

I have de saturated , added color , cropped and all kinds of things to help bring that bee out. Not sure how to edit. I have three post on that guy.
Thanks for showing interest. You are amazing at this style of photography. I just scratched the surface.
