Mule Deer Buck in Velvet +rework

Description

I was on the short trail to Dixon Reservoir when I saw this buck in the backyard adjacent to the trail. I wasn’t expecting it and only got a couple of shots in before he walked away. He was right next to the foliage behind him so I tried to soften it and darken it to deemphasize it. I tried a black and white version which I liked as well.

Hi Debbie, nice impromptu catch of this beautiful buck. The buck stands out well in the image. I like the head and shoulders crop and the velvet is great to see. The deer seems a good bit soft to me I guess due to the slow shutter speed but it’s great you got this nice image unexpectedly.

Thank you. I ran it through Topaz Sharpen AI, but it is still soft. It was a pretty good ways away and as you said, slow shutter speed.

Good crop and nice set of antelers, but stag is soft, could be due to low shutter speed and I find the shadows quite heavy.

Thank you. I’m not sure what the next step is as this is my first requested critique - I have the full-body shot of this deer, should I post it in this thread as an example of a better crop? I don’t think I can improve the sharpness in post any further with this particular shot given the slow shutter speed.

You may post the new image in new thread.

Aww, what a velvety boy. I like the positioning and the crop, but it looks a bit magenta on my screen and as if the mid-tones could use a boost. The shadows look blocked and the highlights a bit crushed as well. I bet a little work in the curves adjustment would be worth it.

Thanks - I’ll work on that. Can I repost the edited image in this thread? New to this…

Yup, absolutely. Here you go -

(1) Just click the pencil icon to modify that title first. Add +rework or +re-edit to the very first line of your post that shows the title.

(2) To add the re-edited image next to the original one, you’ll click on the pencil icon at the bottom of the original post. You are then taken to the edit mode of your entry. I would suggest placing the cursor at the very top before the original image. That way, the re-edited photo will be the first we see. Please make sure you do not remove the original image. If you want, add some text after the re-edited and original images. That will help viewers know which image they are looking at, if not completely obvious. By doing this, when we click on the first image, we can keep clicking on the arrows to see the others. It’s a lot easier than scrolling up and down.
