Description

Probably 15-20 years ago there was a fad called cramming which involved shooting at very shallow DOF by cramming the front element of the lens into the foreground and shooting through it to produce a soft surround. Enthusiasm for it waned but on occasion my old memory cells remember that some compelling images can still be made using the technique. Not sure this image is all that compelling but it was fun to get back into cramming with this first iris bud to show up in the garden. I’m anticipating a good crop this year which should start showing up in the next couple of weeks. >=))>

Is there enough to hold your attention and interest? Crop tighter? Your thoughts always welcome.

Bill, I too remember “cramming”. Every once in a while I still see images posted to NPN that use something like cramming with good effect. This view looks great, focusing interest nicely on the bud and it’s envelope with lovely green surroundings.

I remember this technique as well, and still use it now and then. It does create some very beautiful results, particularly when you have a dense group of flowers to play with. This image is an excellent example of the results that can be obtained with the technique. No nits from this corner.

Hi Bill,
These colors are fantastic. I definitely think there is enough to hold one’s attention in the color and shapes alone. The softness and colors (and the sense of a flower that will bloom maybe tomorrrow) are really wonderful.

Very cool shot, Bill. I like the colors and the shallow DOF. I’d never heard of cramming and I’m not sure I understand the idea but I like the result here.

So well done, Bill. I too like that technique. I haven’t used it for awhile, so thank you for reminding me. It is all about the bud in this image.

A very pleasing image, Bill, so much so that I wonder why the “fad” faded away. Never heard of “cramming”, are you shooting through part of the plant?

I’ve never heard of cramming, but it seems like an idea that will resonate with me.

I’m really enjoying this image Bill. Bold colours and lovely shapes and lines…and the promise of a bloom tomorrow.

Yes. It works best if there is a very small window to shoot through with a clear view of the subject and intervening foliage close to the front lens element. Use a shallow DOF and pick one critical spot on the subject to emphasize. Here I wanted the tip of the bud sharp and let everything else fall off. >=))>
