Description
It has taken a long while for the heat of summer to give way to the cooler temperatures of Autumn. Today was chilly and bleak.
Like clockwork this pair of galahs have decided to start renovating the ant’s nest. Ants’ nests are being used because of the lack of tree hollows. The pair (old female on the left, younger male on the right) may lose interest over the next few days.

Bright sky subdued in ACR. Shadows lifted on birds only. A very soft, diagonal Linear Gradient from the bottom left to darken the ants nest.
Your birds are so wonderful, as is your rendering of them! I can’t imaging living in an ant’s nest! I assume the ants have moved on. The soft light is lovely, and lovely colors to match it. I’d love to see more of these two!
You have an excellent skill in getting more than one bird in your images and they always seem to be synchronized. I’m happy to get one bird in the frame. The sky of this one, dreary or not mirrors, the plumage in the birds. Very nice.
Attractive birds, Glenys, showing great detail. Both are nicely posed and both in focus, which as David implied is tough to do sometimes. The sky complements the birds. I envy your backyard birds.
Hi Glenys
The Galahs are nicely framed, and even their feather coloring works with the color palette of this photograph.

Nice capture. I like the fact that both are in focus. The diagonal aspect with the tree and sky make for an interesting presentation.
Interesting image and I love the composition, Glennie. Will this species use artificial cavities (nest boxes)?
Thank you, Glenys. Your photo made my day. This is so much more than the birds! The colors and tone are so beautiful, so amazing that they exist at all, let alone blend together, that the amazing capture of the birds is almost beside the point! I congratulate you on this beautiful image of color!
Thank you everyone!
@Diane_Miller , galahs, kookaburras, smaller kingfishers and possums use these white ants’ nests to breed and shelter in. The ants don’t seem to worry them and the nest is quickly rebuilt after the critter has left.
@Dennis_Plank , Galahs will use nest boxes readily. I have several on my property, but the galahs have overlooked them. Nest boxes are used in urban (and rural) areas where natural tree hollows are non existant now. They do require large, deep boxes. Unfortunately, galahas are quite destructive and will chew a nest box to pieces in a very short time.
