Oldman River Headwaters

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I loved the leading line of the river and the dynamic sky in an otherwise average scene on a windblown roadside shot. I went shooting in a beautiful area with not the best light that day so I was pleased to come away with this.

Specific Feedback

I was shooting in very high winds in low light, so I chose a wide open aperture on my R7 kit lens at 18mm to keep my shutter speed up. I feel like the depth is decent in such a wide angle. Looking for opinions on that.

Technical Details

ISO 100 locked, 18mm, F/ 5.0, 1/125

You caught some gorgeous light here. I also love how the sections of countryside alternate from right to left to right and back again, ending in the distant mountains. A very restful scene.

That was my first thought too.

This is lovely Greg. The composition has a really nice flow through the image, and the green variation from less yellow on the left to more yellow on the right is a pleasing contrast.

The composition leads to those distant low mountains and clouds, but that upper left corner then kind of snags the eye over. It might be worth playing with knocking that back a little, even though I’m sure that’s the way it was. I could also see a touch more vignette?

This is a very inviting scene, where the river bends beg one to paddled or float into the distance. I agree that some toning down in the upper left would let the river and the distant mountains catch a bit more attention. The greens are gorgeous.

I agree with the other comments. This is well composed, and the light is wonderful.

Point of geography: What river is this, and where is the shot located?

Yes, like others already mentioned the light is beautiful but I also really love the way the river snakes through the scene. This is a really well composed and executed image though I agree with John about the top left corner.
Do you live in Alberta? I’m in Calgary myself but I’ve never done any photography in the Old Man River area.

I don’t know, that light looks pretty special to me. I think you did a wonderful job working with what you had and the resulting image is quite nice. From a compositional standpoint, I think I’d have preferred to pan the camera left a little bit to allow more room between the curve in the river and the left side of the frame, which would have also included less of the tall hill on the right, potentially better balancing the composition. I love it when photographers create successful images in less than ideal conditions, and you certainly succeeded here.

@Mike_Friel thank you!
@John_Williams I think adding a bit more vignette might help tone down the corner too. It does catch the eye but I like it too. Thank you!
Thanks @Mark_Seaver the green in the mountain valleys are unbelievable at this time of year!
This is the Oldman river headwaters in SW Alberta. It will join the Bow River a few hundred km’s downstream and become the S. Saskatchewan River that flows to Hudson bay. Thanks @Preston_Birdwell
@Tom_Nevesely yes I live in Pincher Creek. It’s beautiful down here and there are no crowds! Thanks for your input!
Thanks @Bret_Edge I am working on balance in these circumstances. I absolutely see what you mean. Cheers!

Exceptional light in this image. It’s just skimming across the tree tops on the left side of the image and on the right it’s playing out across hill making those greens pop. I think the colors are well done and not overly saturated. The composition is nicely balanced although I get what @Bret_Edge is saying too. The right side of the image is quite a bit heavier than the left side of the image due to that mountain on the right being so tall but it’s a minor nit at best. Beautiful image of a beautiful and inviting place.

Hi Gregory,
That sweet light raking across the landscape from left to right has created a very lovely and inviting scene. I am also enjoying the way the river winds it’s way into the scene as it draws the viewer along with it. The cloud formations add the little drama and help fill up what would have been what would have been a bland sky. My only suggestion about the ULC has been addressed by @John_Williams rework. Beautifully done.

Ahh, that’s a beautiful part of the world! There’s so much to explore in the Crowsnest Pass area and down around Waterton. I really should head down there one of these days. :slightly_smiling_face:
