One Eyed Flicker

My avian entry for this challenge. One eyed birds are actually fairly common. Disease, accidents, fights with other birds contribute to the loss of eye tissue. This bird came around to my house for about four years and then failed to show up last year. Throughout the four-year period it was visiting my home, we saw it raise a family several times. It always seem to be able to get around quite easily despite its handicap.

Both the light difference and the shallow DOF really brings this guy out.

David, this injured flicker shows up well (as does it’s perch). Yes, nature is quite resilient and I think it’s important to remember that. As as guess, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that 4-5 years is a normal life span for a flicker (wikipedia agrees), so this one had a normal life.
