Oriental Darter drying wings

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Oriental Darter drying wings after a successful fishing trip inside the pond, it needs to dry the wings, before taking flight again, as the feathers become heavy with water.

Specific Feedback

I have couple of frames, where wings are not clipped, but water droplets are best captured in this frame. Do you think this frame works?

This is excellent Jagdeep. The water droplets are the story here. I love the patterns you were able to get with the backlighting and the right SS. It would be better without the clipped wings, but this is excellent as is.

The water and wing position really tell the story here. Nice backlighting as well.

A wonderful use of backlight, Jagdeep. It makes it look more like the bird is in a rainstorm than drying, but that’s irrelevant to the artistry of this image.

Perfect backlighting, Jagdeep. The deg ree of sharpness in thewater drops is excellent. Looks as if he/she is shaking some of the water off, too, as some of the drops are radiating out away from the bird. The muted colours and excellent bokeh make this unique and quite compelling.

The frame works very nicely with the clipped wings. The backlight is superb and the water drops are excellent. I agree with @Sandy_Richards-Brown that is it “unique and quite compelling.” Very small nit: The bright water drop on the bottom slightly draws attention.

I do think the water is a strong artistic element here and overcomes any limitations from the composition. I love the bokeh on the background light sources. Have you considered looking for a little more detail in the birds chest without overdoing the water drop highlights there?
