About This Image

I had stopped in Palm Springs for the night returning to California from a cross country trip from Atlanta. I got up early to hopefully avoid traffic going through LA on my way home to Santa Ynez. I was blessed with this amazing sunset, the color filled most of the sky and the colors on the clouds seemed very painterly, almost unreal. I didn’t really do too much to the image, mostly cloning out a few strings of Christmas lights wrapped around the trunks of a few of the trees. (Photographed in early January)

What wonderful light you got here Scott. The gradient of the sky as it is darker at the top and gradually gets lighter towards the bottom works so well. I’ve spent a lot of time in the California desert, and that evening glow after the sun sets is magical. Well captured.

Sensational colors, Scott. The backlit palm trees make for an interesting foreground element and I love that you have little to njo detail in them. It works really well. I love the gradient in the sky colors as well. The fact that you did little to the image in processing speaks volumes about the conditions you had. I’m not noticing any mountains in this scene so you must have been shooting due East as Palm Springs is basically surrounded by mountains. Beautiful image.

Scott, this is quite the catch, with the palm trees silhouetted against a very colorful and well textured sky. Have you thought about a pano version without so much solid black at the bottom?

Hi Scott,
That is some seriously nice cloud color you were able to capture that evening. It is very painterly and full of some wonderful textures. I think the silhouetted palm trees provide a nice anchor to the scene. The gradation of color in the sky also works beautifully in this image. I could see maybe losing about 1/4th from the bottom, but that is just my personal prefernce as this is nice as is. Looks like the perfect way to end your trip.

Thank you @Ted_Forman , @Alice , for your comments.

@David_Haynes , you are correct, it was shot looking east into the sunrise, thank you for commenting.

@Mark_Seaver and @Ed_Lowe , I think both of you are correct, it is a little heavy on the bottom, so I did a a crop and I think it looks a lot better. Thank you for the suggestion!
