About This Image

This photo was taken around 5:30pm in Borrego Springs, CA. I took the photo with my iPhone, the color only stayed pink for about 5 minutes. It was one of those moments when you grab your phone because it’s sitting right there next to you, you jump up and get the shot, then it’s gone.

Feedback Requested

I decided to leave the palm trees dark as this is a silhouettes challenge, however I’m not sure the palm trees are prominant enough in the image to qualify as a “silhouette”??

Alice, this looks great. There’s a fine “swirl” in the clouds. The palm trees are also somewhat wind blown. For me, there’s a bit of a double take in the viewing as part of me wanted to turn the area where the colors fade in the sky into a ridgeline!!!

Interesting, I didn’t see the “ridge line” until you pointed it out, now I see it clearly.

Hi Alice,
The color combination of warm and cool tones works beautifully in the sky. As @Mark_Seaver already pointed out this image has a wonderful wind blown sense of motion both in the sky as well as the palm trees. While this is quite nice as is I can see a twofer here. I hope you do not mind, but this is what I was thinking. Just my opinion of course. The phones of today can certainly produce some beautiful results.

Great capture Alice! I like the sense of movement in the image, both in the clouds and the trees. A very dynamic composition that I think is improved with the crop Ed suggested, I think it simplifies the image and brings the focus onto the more important parts of the scene. I went through a phase for about 5 years where for the most part I only took grab shots with my iPhone and I’m always surprised with how well it performs.

Hi Ed, I like your crop, It still maintains the feel and I’ve always loved a square aspect ratio.
Thank you, I think I will repost an edit.

Alice: A beautiful scene with the aforementioned wind blown look. The crop is a significant improvement IMO. It took me a long time to remember that I have a camera with me almost 24-7 and that it is a very competent piece of equipment. Good work taking advantage of a unique and wonderful moment. >=))>
