Palo verde

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I love palo verde trees. This one made me think of a dancer. I decided to use a large aperture to tamp down some of the detail and draw more attention to the shapes.

Very fascinating! The darker trunk just below the middle is the center of interest or focal point for me, and then the branches reaching out at the top are an unexpected (and lovely) surprise. The branches there that come forward and down bring my eye back into the image very nicely! Super find and presentation!

Wow !!! The shapes and tone work well in this image. Perfect in B&W… To use a larger aperture as you did is really interesting. You had vision and captured what you wanted and what you saw in this photograph. To see this with the shapes and not all the detail is so cool. I never really thought like that. That gives another direction or idea when shooting. Very Cool Don…

Diane, Gill, thanks for the thoughtful comments.

I like this, Don. What would have been a total mess in color or with more depth of field, becomes very artistic with the settings you used. You did a great job of extracting the essence of the scene.

Don: I’m late to this party but I’m glad I came. Just a marvelously conceived and executed image. I love how you’ve filled the frame with so much to consider and savor. Most excellent. >=))>

Thanks, Bill. Glad you enjoyed it.

There is definitely a sense of movement here, but for me it’s more of a nudibranch like bend and push, even though this is totally without color (the exact opposite of nudibranchs). Anyway…going with a wider aperture worked very well since we tend to get snagged on detail when we should be looking a the whole. Also going with monochrome worked to emphasize those shapes you fell for. Terrific and I love that you included it in Flora.

Thank you, Kristen.

“[W]e tend to get snagged on detail when we should be looking a the whole.” Exactly.

I love the details when viewed full-sized Don. This would make a really nice “huge” print.
