Striking image! (Impact? Yes!) I love the sparkly nature of the flowers. and that two of them are in a similar orientation with a view into the throats. Amazing sharpness for f/29 – I would have thought that diffraction from the small aperture would cause some loss of sharpness.
I’m curious if you placed a black card behind the flower, or darkened the BG in post? I always think it’s a nice touch to have a slight bit of tonal detail in a dark BG, but certainly not a requirement.
This is really phantom! Sharp image of white blossoms with yellow centers which was taken using high aperture and ring flash with black background really has a lot of impact! I also wonder what it would look like if BG had some detail.
Thank you for your comments. I find that with good lenses, diffraction is less of a problem. I rarely print larger than 16 x 20 and I have found that the Canon 100mm macro (also the Nikon 100mm macro, when I had a Nikon system) will not have a problem with a print of that size. George Lepp has similar experiences with high quality lenses and he prints larger sizes than I do.
With a ring flash, focusing on a close object, the background often fades to black as the light diminishes with the square of the distance. I do use a black rayon cloth in the field when there are distracting elements that are too close.
Thank you for your comments. I find that without any background, my attention is directed to the subject. That, I believe, is a personal preference and I know others have a different view.
Excellent image that stands out nicely with the black background. You said it was in the wild. Is it a ground plant or one that attaches to a tree? Just curious. Yes, it has plenty of impact.
Lovely flower cluster beautifully done! Love the white flowers on dark background. dof and sharpness are very well handled. I also like the rework. it has more impact than the first.
