Pine Siskin on Cone Flower

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is from almost a month ago because I got busy with other things and forgot to download a couple of days images. While it looks like this bird is in the fog, the effect was created by shooting through the screen on our porch. I liked the effect, so I decided to post this series.

Specific Feedback

Which appeals the most to you? The second and third images had a second out of focus bird and a couple of flowers in the background that didn’t want to cooperate in forming a composition so they got removed via old fashioned cloning. Does that show?

Technical Details

All images taken with a Sony A1, FE 200-600 + 1.4 TC @ 840 mm, hand held, 1/320, iso 1600. Processing in LR & PS CC. All images cropped to approximately 6700x4800 (I wasn’t worried about consistency). Taken at 7:00 a.m. on July 25th.

Nice shots all three, especially for being through a screen. It truly looks like a foggy, or smoky day in the neighborhood. I like the pose of the bird in the first one best Dennis.

Interesting idea that worked well!
#1 is best, imo, with that nice pose

I like all three but prefer no. 3. I like the brighter light on the head and breast, open beak and one flower. I used to take photos through screens (among other things), but haven’t thought about it for years (until now). Love the effect.

Hi Dennis, really like the “foggy” effect here. We can still even see details on the bird with the screen treatment. I like #1 the most as it seems to have the most engaging pose to me.

I like the effect you have here from shooting through the screen. I’ll go with the first shot for the pose and the additional flowers. Nice work.

Hi Denis
The screen door softness effect is very similar to the silk stocking technique used in film and broadcasting to give the actor a softer look.
Very Nice.
