Pine Siskin

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Some years I don’t see any Pine Siskins, but this year they’re in abundance. I liked this for the somewhat dynamic pose.

Excellent detail, Allen - love the pose, BG, eye, and that the stick is off-level. The framing is cool, too. Fine work!

Nice job, Allen. That blue looks pretty deep for a northwest sky. Other than that, I love it.

Hi Dennis, It was one of those very clear winter days and the sky was a very deep blue. I didn’t do anything in post to intentionally boost the blue.

It is a dynamic pose and I really like the back view. Feathers are such amazing things and showing all that neat organization and patterning is a treat. I’ve noticed the same thing with these and other birds, mostly Redpolls, that they seem to vanish some years and descend in a hoard in others. I also agree about winter skies - sometimes the blue is intense, not maybe as much as an October sky, but close. Not always our first choice for bird backgrounds, but this one works well.

HI Allen
The Pine Siskin has very good feather detail and eye contact. The Blue sky is helped by the dark framing of the photograph.

I’ll join in here to say how much I like this portrait. I like the trick with the black border. Very appealing, overall. Well done, I say.
