Plains Prickly Pear

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

A number of the spring wildflowers are starting to bloom in MT. While “chasing” a different flower, this yellow flower and it’s plant caught my eye. Having it start to sprinkle while shooting was an added bonus.

Specific Feedback

The extra spines are deliberate, as a way to let more of the plant add to the scene.

Technical Details

R5 180 mm macro, 1/160 s, f/13, iso 800, tripod. a 29 shot stack for dof on the flower and spines.

Mark: Good decisions here and a wonderful capture of this beauty. I’m loving cactus flowers more and more and the contrast of the soft flower with the sharp spines works really well. Most excellent. >=))>

Beautiful job on the bloom, Mark. I’m a bit torn about the composition. I love seeing all that detail in the bloom, but it feels rather chopped off at the bottom, particularly with the orphan spines poking into the frame. I’m thinking this might have been more appealing to my taste if you’d shot it vertically and gotten a bit more of the pad into the frame.
